Neil Barry Moss

Neil Barry Moss wurde in Südafrika geboren und studierte Oper, Musik- und Theaterwissenschaft in Kapstadt. 2015 graduierte er im Studiengang Regie und Dramaturgie in Verona, Italien. Im selben Jahr gab er sein Debüt als Regisseur mit Le nozze di Figaro (Die Hochzeit des Figaro) am Teatro Rossini in Pesaro. Von 2016 bis 2019 war er als Regieassistent, Regisseur und Kostümbildner an der Staatsoper Hannover engagiert. Im Juni 2018 gewann Moss den zweiten Preis beim 10. Europäischen Opernregie-Preis EOP in Zürich. Von 2019 bis 2023 war er Spielleiter an der Deutschen Oper Berlin und gab 2020 dort sein Hausdebüt mit der preisgekrönten und vielbeachteten Inszenierung Das Rheingold auf dem Parkdeck. 2022 inszenierte er für das Landestheater Coburg La damnation de Faust (Fausts Verdammnis) von Hector Berlioz in der Coburger Morizkirche.

Zur Spielzeit 2023/24 wurde er Operndirektor und Teil des Direktoriums am

Landestheater Coburg, mit dem er im Oktober 2023 das GLOBE COBURG eröffnen konnte, was deutschlandweite Beachtung fand. Hier inszenierte er die Opern Macbeth von Giuseppe Verdi und Hänsel und Gretel von Engelbert Humperdinck, für die er auch die Kostüme entwarf. Das Theater versteht er als einen Raum des neuen Erlebens, der Begegnung und des lebendigen Dialogs, der alle Menschen einladen und Gesellschaft mitgestalten sollte. Als Bühnen- und Kostümbildner arbeitet er mit der großen Illusion, farbstarken Akzenten und humorvollen Details. Bereits als Teil des Direktoriums am Landestheater Coburg hatte die Begegnung und der Austausch mit den Menschen vor Ort höchste Priorität für ihn.

Seit September 2024 ist Neil Barry Moss Intendant des Landestheaters Coburg. In der Spielzeit 2024/25 inszeniert er Il Trittico von Giacomo Puccini, Der fliegende Holländer von Richard Wagner sowie das Erfolgsmusical Chicago von John Kander und Fred Ebb.

Neil was born in South Africa and studied Opera and Performance in Cape Town.

In Italy he won the Masters Directing Scholarship at the Verona Accademia dell'Opera, and in 2015 made his Italian debut with Mozart's »Le Nozze di Figaro« at the Teatro Rossini in Pesaro.

From 2016 until 2019 he worked at the Hannover Staatsoper as in-house Stage Director, Costume Designer and Assistant Stage Director and in June 2018 he was the runner up in the 10th European Opera Directing Prize in Zurich, Switzerland.

Since June 2019, Neil has worked as in-house Stage Director, Costume Designer and Assistant Stage Director at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

In June 2020 Neil made his house debut with, »Das Rheingold auf dem Parkdeck«. This production made the cover of Opernwelt, was nominated in the category “Most unique opera experience 2020" and was critically acclaimed in the New York Times.

For the 2023/24 season, Neil became Operndirektor and a member of the Direktorium at the Landestheater Coburg, where he was able to open the GLOBE COBURG in October 2023—an event that received nationwide attention. There, he directed the operas Macbeth by Giuseppe Verdi and Hänsel und Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck, for which he also designed the costumes. Neil sees the theater as a space for new experiences, encounters, and vibrant dialogue—a place that should invite everyone and contribute to shaping society. As a stage and costume designer, he works with grand illusions, vivid color accents, and humorous details. Even during his time as part of the executive team at Landestheater Coburg, engaging with and exchanging ideas with the local community was a top priority for him.

Since September 2024, Neil Barry Moss became the Artistic Director (Intendant) of the Landestheater Coburg. In the 2024/25 season, he directed Il Trittico by Giacomo Puccini, The Flying Dutchman by Richard Wagner, and the hit musical Chicago by John Kander and Fred Ebb.
